This paper reports the development of an investigative diagnostic action on teacher training in the profile of initial and continuing education in the teaching of natural sciences and biology, emphasizing the lack of teachers with this specific training. The discussion about the teaching profession analyzed the function of developing the theoretical and scientific training of the student, but also as someone who should promote their humanization. The data collection was done to assess the demand for teachers who work in disciplines other than those of their training. The study found that the value attributed by the teacher in relation to the knowledge process becomes equivalent to that related to the content to be developed in the classroom, revealing a concern with the process of teaching and learning sciences and biology. The result showed the shortage of qualified teachers in the areas of natural sciences and biology in elementary schools. Thus, the importance of the initial and continuing education process for the effectiveness of the work in these disciplines is highlighted, to enable the specific qualification of teachers, by area of activity.
